Creating A Buzz About Creative Careers
We're celebrating the launch of our new Progression Package for 2022-2023; a collection of school and college outreach activities designed to inspire students to consider a career in live events, film, TV or virtual production.
Shaunagh Conway, Events & Outreach Officer at Backstage Academy, highlights that the Progression Package is about educating students about the spectrum of opportunities the industry has to offer.
“We are dedicated to raising awareness of the incredible career opportunities in the live events and creative industries and the benefits of higher education as a progression route.”
The programme is designed to widen access, encourage engagement, and urge participation through a range of interactive and inspirational activities geared towards helping students imagine themselves producing the next global star’s live music tour, building virtual worlds for the next Hollywood blockbuster, or managing the next Broadway hit.
Serving schools and colleges across the UK, Backstage Academy’s Progression Package offers an exciting line-up of events, starting with a free two-hour workshop where students will get the opportunity to create concepts, design and plan together.
“As part of this workshop, students will work in teams to plan and design their own festival and learn about the job roles, career prospects and earning potential that the live events and creative industries have to offer.”
Additionally, options for schools and colleges include an onsite taster day at Backstage Academy, the opportunity for institutes to host intensive subject-focused workshops – covering lighting, sound, visuals, virtual production or stage and production management – as well as an exciting summer festival in 2023.
“The latter will be a collaborative event where Backstage Academy lay the stage – for schools and colleges across the UK to showcase their creative talent as part of our Platform Festival in June 2023. The event will give students from each participating institution the opportunity to put on a performance and work in tandem with Backstage Academy students to technically produce a show. We’re laying the platform for the next generation of creatives."
Shaunagh explains that the alternative and immersive approach is deliberate.
“There’s often a gap between the perception of what a course might be like and reality. We want to bridge that gap by giving students a realistic view of what to expect from higher education. It’s not just about raising the awareness of our degree courses, but about showing students what the work is really like by immersing them in the experience. Additionally, our industry covers such a wide spectrum and students are often unaware of the incredible opportunities available to them. Our goal is to educate them about their options and offer them the pathways to get there.”
The inspiration for our Progression Package programme stems from our passion for our industry. From live music and theatre, to film, TV and virtual production, it brings together the creative and the technical to produce incredible live experiences. This is what we want to showcase to students.
